Michael J. Scanlon
Michael J. Scanlon is an associate in the firm's Honolulu office and a member of the Labor & Employment and Litigation & Alternative Dispute Resolution practice groups. His practice focuses on defending employers from claims brought under state and federal anti-discrimination law, disability law and labor law. In addition, he provides counsel regarding compliance with labor and employment laws to firm-wide clients.
Representative Matters
- Defended employers from claims brought under Title VII, Hawaii's Fair Employment Practices Act and other discrimination laws, as well as lawsuits involving retaliation claims, common law theories of wrongful termination and collateral torts.
- Advised employers with regard to the Fair Labor Standards Act, the Family and Medical Leave Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act, and the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act.
- Assisted employers with legal issues that may arise relating to successor liability and dislocated worker notification statutes.
- Drafted employee handbooks.
Prior Experience
Before attending Stanford Law School, Michael earned a Ph.D. in Japanese literature from Columbia University. While in law school, he served as the research assistant for William B. Gould IV, former Chairman of the National Labor Relations Board.
